The Brenthurst Foundation is calling on recent graduates to apply for the 2025 Machel-Mandela Internship Program, which honors the legacies of Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa, and Graca Machel.

This internship offers graduates an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with one of Africa’s foremost think tanks. Interns will contribute to various projects, including organizing events, writing research papers and opinion pieces, and engaging in policy-related initiatives.

Interns will commit to full-time work for a minimum of six months, beginning on February 1, 2025. The program is open to individuals from South Africa and beyond, with the successful candidates being based at the Brenthurst Foundation’s main office in Parktown, Johannesburg. Interns will collaborate with the Foundation’s team on diverse projects, some of which may require international travel.

Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend. Housing accommodations may be provided if necessary, in line with the Foundation’s policies. Additional work-related expenses may also be covered, at the Foundation’s discretion.

About the Brenthurst Foundation

Established in 2004 by the Oppenheimer family, the Brenthurst Foundation carries forward the legacy of the Brenthurst Initiative of 2003, which ignited crucial policy discussions on South Africa’s economic growth. The Foundation is dedicated to advancing economic growth throughout Africa by hosting influential thought leaders and experts to explore various strategies. Internship Benefits:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Preferably under 30 years of age
  • Possession of a Master’s degree
  • Strong proficiency in both written and spoken English; knowledge of additional languages, especially African languages, is an advantage
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in relevant IT tools
  • Experience in copy-editing and proofreading is advantageous
  • A genuine interest in fostering innovative solutions for Africa’s economic development, with a solid understanding of the Foundation’s mission
  • A background in African economics and politics, particularly in Southern Africa
