Trillium Arts proudly announces the annual “Miss Sarah” Fellowship, an opportunity offering a fully funded creative residency designed to nurture artistic growth and inspiration.
Sarah M. Johnson, born on July 10, 1931, in Cleveland County, North Carolina, moved to Hickory, North Carolina, in 1948 in pursuit of new prospects. Recognized as both Hickory’s and North Carolina’s NAACP “Mother of the Year” in 1986, Sarah’s legacy endures through her dedication to community service and social activism. This fellowship celebrates her impactful contributions by supporting creativity and justice-oriented projects in her honor. Sarah died on the 17th of July 2019, at her elderly age of 88.

The fellowship provides a ten-day residency during July, hosted at Trillium Arts’ “Firefly Creek” cabin in Mars Hill, North Carolina, nestled in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Or perhaps at E. Patrick Johnston and Stephen Lewis’s “Montford Manor” nearer Asheville. This opportunity includes travel support to Asheville and a $1,000 stipend.
The “Miss Sarah” Fellowship offers Black women writers a quiet, supportive space to dedicate themselves to their craft, whether initiating new projects or advancing current ones. For the 2025 fellowship, there will be a special focus on poetry.

Fellowship Benefits:
- Ten-day individual engagement in July 2025, conducted at either Trillium Arts’ “Firefly Creek” as well as “Montford Manor” close to Asheville, North Carolina.
- $1, 000 honorarium and a return trip assistance to Asheville, the state of North Carolina.
- Additional resources as needed to support the writer’s work.
Eligibility:
- Open to Black women writers at any stage in their career.
- Travel assistance provided for applicants based within the United States; international applicants are responsible for covering their own flights to the U.S.

Application Requirements:
Please submit all materials in PDF or Word format, with each file under 10 MB.
- Project Proposal: A one-page description of your project, including its goals and anticipated outcomes.
- “Why Trillium Liberal Arts?” Summary: A one-page description of how the scholarship at Trillium Liberal Arts will benefit your artistic progress.
- Recommendation Letter: One letter submitted directly by a recommender, addressing the following:
- Their connection to you (such as mentor, colleague, editor).
- The value of your project.
- Its potential impact on others.
- Why the recommender finds your project inspiring.
- Writing Sample: A sample representing the work you wish to focus on during the fellowship. This sample should be between 10-15 pages, double-spaced, with one-inch margins in a 12-point font. The submission must be an original work-in-progress, excluding theses, dissertations, or edited collections. Include your name and project title on each page and submit the sample as a single PDF.
Application Deadline: Submit by November 15, 2024, at 11:59 p.m., with a grace period for recommenders to submit letters by November 18, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
